Manchester Airport
History :
Many short-lived airfields popped up around Manchester from 1910, before it was realised in 1928, that Manchester needed a permanent airport or the city would suffer commercially. Barton, five miles west of the city, was chosen as the location for the new airport and was opened for use in 1930. During construction at Barton, a temporary airfield was opened in Rackhouse in Wythenshawe and became the first municipal airfield in Manchester.
Heavy rain, causing major water damage and water logging, disrupted services and the airport was ruled unsuitable for large aircrafts. It was decided that the costs involved in restoring the damage were far greater than would be beneficial. So a new location for the airport was found south west of the city at Ringway and construction began in 1934.
During the wartime from 1940 to 1945 Ringway hosted 60,000 of Britain's airborne Forces troops for training. Plane manufacturers A.V. Roe and Fairey set up shop at Manchester and it was here that the famous prototype of the Lancaster bomber made its first flight. After the war, civil expansion grew and so did the length of the runway. Development also included a new terminal with air traffic control facilities, new departure hall and three passenger piers.
In the 1980s the airport was designated an International Gateway handling direct long-haul international flights. With the approval to build a second runway, Manchester is expected to become the second busiest airport in the UK in the future.
