Liverpool John Lennon Airport
History :
1930 saw the first scheduled flight leave Liverpool airport but was not officially opened until three years later in 1933. By the late 1930's the rising popularity of the airport meant that a new passenger terminal and hangers were needed to be built. Because of the convenient location by the Irish Sea, the primary scheduled flights were to Ireland.
During wartime the airport was used for testing of military aircraft built in nearby Rootes and Lockhead. The grass strip runways were upgraded to hard runways and the airport was under military use until 1961. By now the airport was in local authorities hands and with some new improvements and 24 hour operating hours, was opened in 1966. Ownership changed hands numerous times over the next 20 odd years, before finally settling with the current owners, Peel Holdings plc in 1997.
