Leeds Bradford International Airport
History :
Leeds Airport, originally a grassland, began as Yeadon Aerodrome in 1931 when it commenced club training and flights. By 1935 scheduled flights to Newcastle, Edinburgh, Blackpool and Isle of Man began and a further 35 acres of runway added. A year later the Royal Auxiliary Air Force formed a base at the Aerodrome and seasonal holiday services still continued.
By the time WWII came around, civil aviation ended and Yeadon had become a base for military aircraft testing. The base was transformed with the addition of two runways, taxiways and extra hangers, making it more accommodating for the aircraft testing. Civil flights recommenced again in 1947 and six years later Yeadon Aviation Ltd was formed. New destinations were scheduled over the following years to Belfast, Jersey, Ostend, Southend, IOW, Dusseldorf, London and Dublin.
In 1965, the airport went without a terminal building when they newly built terminal was destroyed by fire. A replacement terminal was built to replace it in 1968. The airport underwent significant redevelopment when it was evident the airports status could advance to a regional airport. This work began in 1982 and the first developments were opened in 1985.
The airport was taken over by the five surrounding boroughs in 1987 and operating restrictions were lifted to allow flights to depart and arrive and any time of the day or night by 1994. Since 1996 the airport terminal has been undergoing development resulting in significant overall growth.
