Glasgow Airport
History :
In 1932 Glasgow Airport was created for the RAF base at Renfrew. By 1943 the Royal Navy took over and housed the Royal Auxiliary Air Force 602 and the airfield was then known as HMS Sanderling. It wasn't until 1966 that Glasgow was officially opened and recorded 1 million passengers in its first year.
Major development began when BAA purchased the airport in 1975. A planned £2 million expansion on the terminal building and runway extension to cater for larger jets would raise the capacity to 3.5 million by 1986. Another extension of £55 million in the late eighties saw the terminal increase by 70% to now accommodate for 6 million customers.
When Prestwick airport lost control on transatlantic flights in 1990, many airlines moved across to the Glasgow runway. This combined with the increased number of gates, remote parking areas and expansion from lost cost operators, assisted passenger numbers to rise progressively.
