East Midlands Airport

History :

East Midlands Airport is the UK's largest pure cargo airport and houses DHL, TNT and UPS and Royal Mail. HRH Prince Philip opened the East Midlands Airport on the site of the RAF base in 1965. It was not an instant financial success as an airport but this quickly changed as freight traffic increased development was needed.

In 1970 the runway and terminal were extended and a freight complex was developed. In the years to come the airport terminal was needed further extension after 1985 saw 1 million passengers pass through. The terminal was opened in 1986 by HRH Princess Anne. A further extension proposal was turned down when in 1992 local authorities could not fund the development.

Soon after the local authority shareholders made the decision to become the first regional airport to enter the private sector. In 1993 the airport was bought for £24.3 million by the National Express Group. Over the next 8 years, £77 million was invested into the infrastructure and passenger facilities, of the airport. Work began on a new business park in 1999 and DHL developed a £35 million purpose built facility on the airport site in 2000. Manchester Airport Group purchased the airport from National Express Group in 2000 for £241 million.

Getting there :

Train - The nearest train stations are in Loughborough, Derby, Nottingham, Leicester and Long Eaton. An Air-line shuttle bus service runs every day to and from the airport and Long Eaton and Loughborough train stations.

Bus - Barton buses number 123 runs between Derby, Loughborough, Leicester and the airport. Nottingham City Transport run a number 5 bus to the airport from Nottingham. Air-line shuttle bus runs between Loughborough and the airport. National Express runs coaches from all over the UK to East Midlands Airport.

Car - The airport is situated two miles from Junction 24 and one mile from Junction 23a of the M1. The airport is in between Nottingham, Derby, Loughborough and Leicester.
