Cardiff International Airport
History :
In the early 1940s, the Air Ministry requisitioned land in the rural Vale of Glamorgan to set up a wartime satellite aerodrome and training base for RAF Spitfire pilots. The airfield officially began life on 7 April 1942 when it was taken over by No 53 Operational Training Unit.
The first commercial service started in 1952 with Aer Lingus to Dublin and soon after, flights to France, Belfast and Cork. Glamorgan Country Council took control of the airport in 1965 and in 1971 the first transatlantic flight took place from Cardiff. Development took place on the Terminal Buildin, Control Tower and the main runway doubled in length, enabling the airport to accommodate larger aircraft.
During the early 1980's charter traffic to the Mediterranean increase and passenger levels soar to 250,000. Soon the runway was extended 750ft and was attracting even more business in 1986. In 1992, HRR Princess Alexandra unveiled a commemorative plaque to celebrate 50 years of flying form Cardiff at the Golden Jubilee Anniversary.
Major expansion projects began in 1993 including re-development of the landside forecourt area, expansion and modernisation of the International Departures Lounge, modification of the roadway access to the Terminal, and construction of a new security access point.
