Belfast International Airport

History :

The first civil air service at Aldergrove started in 1933 with a Glasgow to Aldergrove route operated by Midland and Scottish Air Ferries. But it wasn't until 1966 that the airport ran its first regular jet service to Gatwick. Originally Aldergrove was selected to the Royal Flying Corps training establishment during World War I and remained open after the war for the Royal Air Force. In 1921 Aldergrove made television, when King George V and Queen Mary visited Northern Ireland, touching down at the airport. 1925 was the year Northern Ireland's own Special Reserve unit No 502 (Ulster) Squadron RAF made Aldergrove their home. During World War II it remained an airbase, but after the war, civil flights were moved back to Aldergrove. Today Belfast airport is the principal gateway to the north of Ireland. In October this year HRH Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother reopened Aldergrove as a civil airport and introduced the terminal building.
